I am excited about Google Buzz. Why? Glad you asked. Let me start with Twitter. Twitter has never exactly sat right with me. Micro- blogging is clever idea that went down well with the modern, low attention span, high caffeinated internet dwellers of the late past decade and Twitter executed the idea perfectly. A limit of 140 characters was enough to jot down a brief description of your situation or thoughts without going in to detail, a familiar medium for those raised tapping out endless SMS messages to their friends on cellular phones. Where it fails is allowing any more than a basic level of communication.
So what do I want out of a micro-blogging service? Well, let's drop the micro for a start. If all you can fit in an update is a quick summary of where you are or what you just ate, it's not going to make for thrilling or stimulating reading. Of course micro-blogging was never meant to provide an output for sterling literary comments or intellectual discussion, but I need a bit more room to breathe. Enter Buzz. No obvious character cap, yet an small, unimposing interface encouraging entry of anything from a regular blog post to minute updates of situation or thoughts. Embedding of pictures allows further depth without relying on external picture hosting sites.
The SI system suggests we name it milli-blogging, or perhaps centi-blogging. Taking a cue from SD and USB, we could call it mini- blogging. Probably the most sensible name would be flexi-blogging. Mish mashes of updates, thoughts, mini-blog posts, photos, shared items makes for a truely flexible and powerful mini-blogging experience.
Welcome to the social, Google.
